We have all heard of it. But, what is it and what do you do about it?
WHAT IS ASBESTOS?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral once lauded for its versatility, heat resistance, tensile strength and insulating properties.
Asbestos has been used commercially since the late 1800s. The building construction industry frequently used it for strengthening cement, plastics, insulation, roofing, fireproofing and sound absorption in ceiling and floor tiles, paints, coatings and adhesives.
Many buildings and residential homes still contain asbestos.
Although banned in the United States in 1978, homes built as late as 1986 may still contain asbestos because of remaining stockpiles of materials.
The only way to be 100% sure is to have a sample tested by a competent laboratory. Once you are certain, abatement should only be performed by a qualified and licensed contractor.
